Lhasa & Mt. Kailash Trek

Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, is the spiritual center of Tibetan Buddhism, known for its majestic Potala Palace and the ancient Jokhang Temple. Mount Kailash, sacred to Buddhists, Hindus, Jains and Bön practitioners, is surrounded by a pilgrimage route — the kora — which devotees circumambulate in the hope of spiritual purification and merit. The journey around Kailash, approximately 52 km long, is considered one of the most sacred pilgrimages in the world.

Journey through Tibet and Nepal – to the Sacred Mount Kailash

Already upon arrival in Lhasa, one is surrounded by the unmistakable atmosphere of Tibet – the thin air at high altitude, the omnipresent prayer flags, and the views of the majestic Himalayan peaks. The first day is devoted to rest and slow acclimatization, but the very next morning an unforgettable adventure awaits – a visit to the Potala Palace, the residence of the Dalai Lamas, and a walk through the bustling streets around the Jokhang Temple, where history meets spirituality.

From Lhasa, the road leads across high mountain passes, past the turquoise Yamdrok Lake, and into the town of Gyantse, home to the famous Kumbum stupa. From there, the journey continues to Shigatse, Tibet’s second-largest city. Each day is a passage across endless plateaus, where the landscape opens into boundless horizons dotted with villages where time seems to stand still.

At last, a miracle appears – Lake Mansarovar, considered sacred by both Hindus and Buddhists. Its waters reflect the snow-capped Himalayan peaks, and in the distance the outline of Mount Kailash, the goal of thousands of pilgrims, becomes visible. A short transfer to the town of Darchen means only one thing – the beginning of the great pilgrimage.

The Kora, the circumambulation around Kailash, takes three days. Every step here carries symbolism. First, the path runs along the northern side of the mountain to the Dirapuk Monastery, offering views of Kailash’s majestic north face. The second day is the most challenging – crossing the Dolma La pass at more than 5,600 meters. Here, pilgrims often leave Tibetan prayer flags or stones as offerings.

The descent leads into a valley with the Dzulpuk Monastery, a place of monks and meditation. On the third day, the path slopes back down to Darchen – the circle is completed, and the pilgrimage fulfilled.

The return from Kailash to the Nepalese border is long, yet a feeling of fulfillment remains in the heart. The road winds to the town of Kerung, where Tibet bids farewell with its majestic plateau. Beyond the border, the landscape changes instantly – steep mountains suddenly give way to Nepal’s green valleys.

In Kathmandu, a completely different world awaits – lively streets filled with merchants, the aroma of spices, ancient temples and stupas vibrating with life. Here one can savor the contrast between the silence of the Tibetan plains and the pulsing energy of Nepal’s capital.

After two weeks of adventure, thousands of kilometers, crossings of high mountain passes, and quiet moments by Lake Mansarovar, it is time to say farewell to the Himalayas. Yet in the mind remains an unforgettable image – Mount Kailash, the eternal symbol of spirituality, to which memories will return long after coming home.
